Genetic Algorithm for Solving Berth and Quay Cranes Assignment problems

چکیده
The management of a container terminal is a complex process that involves a vast number of decisions. The berth is the most important resource that affects the capacity of the terminal. The problem is here to allocate berths to arriving vessels and to determine which cranes in the berths process the docked vessels. For creating the berth schedule, the calling schedule of vessels, favourable berthing location (near primary storage, for example) and the number of available cranes can be considered simultaneously. This paper discusses an optimization technique for scheduling Berth and Quay cranes using genetic algorithm (GA). Genetic Algorithms are useful for finding near-optimal solutions. GA requires non-trivial time, but hopefully will search a wider part of the solution space. The objective is to reduce the total stay or delay times of vessels at a port i.e. the waiting, loading and discharging of containers should be done as quickly as possible, in order to save on terminal costs. 2 International Conference on Ports and Waterways – POWA 2007

A Biased Random-Key Genetic Algorithm for the Berth Allocation and Quay Crane Assignment Problem
Maritime transportation plays a crucial role in the international economy. Port container terminals around the world compete to attract more traffic and are forced to offer better quality of service. This entails reducing operating costs and vessel service times. In doing so, one of the most important problems they face is the Berth Allocation and quay Crane Assignment Problem (BACAP). This pro...
متن کاملQuay Cranes and Yard Trucks Scheduling Problem at Container Terminals
A bi-objective mathematical model is developed to simultaneously consider the quay crane and yard truck scheduling problems at container terminals. Main real-world assumptions, such as quay cranes with non-crossing constraints, quay cranes’ safety margins and precedence constraints are considered in this model. This integrated approach leads to better efficiency and productivity at container te...
متن کاملA Genetic Algorithm for Berth Allocation and Quay Crane Assignment
Container terminals are facilities where cargo containers are transshipped between different transport vehicles, for onward transportation. They are open systems that carry out a large number of different combinatorial problems that can be solved by means of Artificial Intelligence techniques. In this work, we focus our attention on scheduling a number of incoming vessels by assigning to each a...
متن کاملA new multi-objective model for berth allocation and quay crane assignment problem with speed optimization and air emission considerations (A case study of Rajaee Port in Iran)
Over the past two decades, maritime transportation and container traffic worldwide has experienced rapid and continuous growth. With the increase in maritime transportation volume, the issue of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission has become one of the new concerns for port managers. Port managers and government agencies for sustainable development of maritime transportation considered "green ports" t...
متن کاملModeling and Solving the Tactical Berth Allocation Problem
In this paper we integrate at the tactical level two decision problems arising in container terminals: the berth allocation problem, which consists of assigning and scheduling incoming ships to berthing positions, and the quay crane assignment problem, which assigns to incoming ships a certain QC profile (i.e. number of quay cranes per working shift). We present two formulations: a mixed intege...
